September 28th - Apple Picking

We took Tyler apple picking at Eckert's in Belleville, Illinois. It was a beautiful day. We decided to go early and if anyone does this next year we'd recommend going early because by the time we left at noon it was packed with people. We were at the end of the peak for red delicious apples and at the beginning of golden delicious apples. We were able to reach really high to get some of what was left of the red delicious apples, so Tyler was only able to pick the ones on the ground. We didn't take those with us but we did let him put them in a bag which would have entertained him all afternoon! He was able to reach up easily to pick the golden delicious apples. After picking apples, we ate lunch, then rode the kiddie train. Tyler easily fell asleep on the way home! We all got to devour a delicious apple crisp made from our very own apples for dinner that evening. What a day!

He's never been so tired...

Tyler was too tired to even finish the bite of hot dog in his mouth!

September 22nd - Parents as Teachers Petting Zoo

Grandma and Grandpa Harness took Tyler to Parent's as Teachers new school year kick-off event. This year they had Old MacDonald and his wife telling stories, a hand-washing demonstration, lots of sensory areas such as the corn bin (most popular - we couldn't pull Tyler away from it), and a petting zoo. Tyler even got to feed a goat, but we never did find the giant turtle!

What a ham!

Still stalling...

September 21st - Forest Park Balloon Race

For the second year in a row, we took Tyler to the Forest Park Balloon Race. Last year we held him most of the time and this year he walked alot. What a difference in a year! Tyler mostly enjoyed watching the Purina Farms Dog Teams. The weather turned out to be really nice and we all had a great time. Here are some pictures.

Stalling....

Normally Tyler goes to bed pretty early but once or twice a week he likes to stall - usually on the weekends (I guess we don't wear him out as much as they do at daycare). He's pretty good at charming mommy and daddy into letting him stay up late.

Making a Mess in the Kitchen

Tyler is into everything now. Nothing is safe. To keep him content in the kitchen we haven't baby-proofed the towel drawer so he has something to play with. He pulls every towel out one at a time. Guess who gets to fold and place them back in the drawer? Well it's definitely not Tyler!

September 9th - First Outing at the Zoo

Jen had a day off in September and took Tyler to meet his Grandma Schroeder, Aunt Jen, and cousin Ethan at the St. Louis Zoo. Tyler just recently learned how to walk so it was a little difficult to keep him contained in his stroller. He enjoyed seeing the animals and hanging around with his new cousin. Ethan was all smiles! Here are some pictures of the afternoon.

June 2008 - First Pony Ride

Sorry this post is out of order but this is such a cute picture of Tyler's first pony ride at Jeff's work picnic back in June that we had to post it. The pony's name is Starlight and Tyler really enjoyed it.

September 7th - Ethan's Baptism

Jeff and I are honored to serve as Ethan's godparents and participated in the baptism service at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. Ethan was all smiles through the entire service. We had a delicious lunch at Ethan's house after the service where he continued to smile all afternoon!

Here are a few pictures of the service.

September 6th - First Train Ride

Tyler got to ride on a model train for the first time. Grandma and Grandpa Harness took him to the train at Kircher Park in Eureka. Since it is new, it was the first time any of us had been on this train but I think it deserves future visits. Tyler had a great time but I'm not sure if he had as much fun as Grandpa Harness, who proudly told the crew all about how his grandpa was a railroad engineer!

After the train ride, we took Tyler to Eureka Days where he road several carnival rides. He got to ride another model train and that was the one he liked the best. I'll post the pictures once I get them from Grandpa Harness.

September 6th - Gym Class

Everyone wants to know what a 1-year old does in gym class so here is a summary of a typical class.

First we play with the gym's toys while waiting for class to start. Tyler is right at home sitting at the kids' table. He's been fending for himself at daycare for a year so he has no problem claiming the toys he likes. When class begins we all sit in a circle, ring bells and sing the welcome song. There is alot of clapping which Tyler is a pro at doing.
The kids practice walking and running around the circle. Tyler enjoys being chased by Miss Danny.
Next we practice last weeks' moves. We learned how to flip Tyler over last week. This is as much work for the parents as it is for the kids!
As you can see Tyler loves it!
Then we have explore the gym time. Over the past few weeks Tyler has picked a favorite piece of equipment and stuck with it. This week was no different. He decided the bars were the most fun this week.
...but crawling under this obstacle was a close second!
Next we did our skill of the week - walking on the balance beam. I think daddy's arms got most of the workout on this one!
Then we practiced somersaults on our own. This is a favorite activity of Tyler. This is the first step.

Here he is in mid-roll. What an athlete!
And finally, he completes the roll with a smile.
There is always a few minutes to play with the balls. At the end of playing all the kids help put the balls away. Tyler is good at bringing the balls to the bin to put away, but needs to work on letting go of the ball. If it was up to him he'd take them all home.
Finally, we play with bubbles, which is a big hit with all the kids.

August 14th Images of Baby Smith #2

I had a follow-up ultrasound on August 14th and got some amazing images of the baby. My OB has a high tech ultrasound machine that renders images of the baby in 3D. It's really something to see. Here are the best images. I was 13.5 weeks at this point.
